The Canadian Library Association has announced the results of its first election under its new governance structure. MALT would like to extend congratulations to all those elected, but especially to Karen Hildebrandt and to John Tooth.

Karen is the Access Services Coordinator at Concordia University College of Alberta, and the only Library Technician to run for the executive. She was formerly convenor of the CLA Library Technician Interest Group and served as president of the Alberta Association of Library Technicians. She was the winner of the 2011 CLA LGIT Award of Merit. We are very proud of Karen’s achievements and happy to have such strong representation for Library Technicians at the national level.

John is the Coordinator of the Instructional Resources Unit, Manitoba Education and has long been an active member of the Manitoba library community. He has won numerous awards for his contributions, including the Margaret B. Scott Award for Leadership in School Libraries in Canada, the Manitoba Library Association Librarian of the Year, the Angela Thacker Memorial Award (with the other members of the CASL Publications Editorial Board) and most recently the Manitoba School Library Association Distinguished Service Award.

Every two years, MALT conducts a survey of Library Technicians and support staff working in Manitoba. We’ve changed the name this year from Salary Survey to simply MALT Survey because it is about so much more than what you are getting paid. The survey provides an overview of the employment and education levels of those working in the library field, and gives us insight into issues affecting Manitoba libraries.

We invite you to participate in the 2011 MALT Survey from October 24 – 30 hosted by Fluid Surveys. The results will be posted here in December and published in our Winter 2012 newsletter.

All responses are anonymous and will be presented in aggregate form.

Remember when you used to go to the MALT website and half the links were broken? You couldn’t find what you were looking for? And the 90s styling made your eyes ache?

Good news!

Our website has been redesigned with a fresh new look which features a clean layout, improved navigation, up-to-date information and (wait for it) pictures! Okay… so the only pictures so far are of the executive, but it’s a start.

We’d love to hear what you think. By the way, you can leave comments now, too.
